How to Count Words, Characters and Reading Time
Word and character counts are useful for essays, product descriptions, social posts, SEO titles, assignments and forms with length limits. Reading-time estimates help writers understand how long a page may take to read.
Word count
A word counter usually identifies groups of text separated by spaces and punctuation. The exact count can vary slightly between software when hyphenated words, URLs or unusual symbols are involved, so use one method consistently when a strict requirement applies.
Character count
Character counts may include or exclude spaces depending on the requirement. Social platforms, metadata fields and application forms often specify a maximum number of characters rather than words.
Reading time
Estimated reading time is normally based on an assumed reading speed. It is only an estimate because technical material, tables and complex sentences take longer than simple prose.
Use the Word Counter
Paste your text into the Word Counter to check words, characters, sentences and estimated reading time. For formatting changes, use the Case Converter. If you need to reverse text for testing or puzzles, use the Text Reverser.
Practical writing tip
Do not optimize only for a target word count. Clear structure, useful information and readable sentences usually matter more than adding filler just to reach a number.
